Ask a Wedding Planner

Question:
I am getting ready to order my wedding invitations and I’m not sure how to word it. My parents are divorced and are both remarried and my fiancé’s parents are not married. That is a lot of names to include on my invitations and really my fiancé and I are paying for the majority of the wedding. What do I do?

Answer:
Your wedding invitation should have the person paying for or hosting the wedding as the person doing the inviting, but there are exceptions to every rule. A good alternative to your problem is to word your invitations to read

Together with our families we,
Mary Sue Smith
And
Robert Richards
Invite you to share in the joy
as we are united together in marriage
on Saturday, the seventh of July
Two thousand and seven
At six o’clock in the evening

Question:
Do I really need all the extras that the sales clerk is trying to sell me with my wedding invitations.
There are reception cards, response cards, informal cards, map cards, place cards, table cards, programs. What are all of these and do I really need them.
I’m so confused.

Answer:
Let’s start from the beginning.  A separate Reception card is needed if you are having a very formal wedding and reception. You may also need a reception card if you need to put a full address of your reception site or a time that does not follow the ceremony.  If you are able to include the reception information on the wedding invitation you place it on the left bottom corner and word it

Reception to follow
Blessed Fellowship Hall

If you can do this and save some money, great!

The Response card is a must if you need a correct count of people attending.  If you are giving a guarantee to anyone you should have a way of knowing who is coming or not.  If you are serving cake and punch and you don’t need seating for everyone then save some money here, but be careful.

Your Informal is a small card that is used for your thank you cards that are personalized with your names on the cover.

Map Cards are just that, a map.  Do you need to provide a map for your location or does most of your guest know where your wedding and reception site is?

Place Cards are needed if you are going to have reserved seating.  A cost saving and more personalized idea is to personalize your favor and use it as a place card.

Table Cards are also used if you are going to have reserved seating.  This can be as simple as table numbers or you can name your tables using your theme.  This is something you can get creative with and also be used as decorations.

Programs are used at the wedding ceremony and can be as unique as your wedding.  Most brides choose to include the wedding ceremony schedule and the bridal party names.
Others have included special messages, prayers, memorials or dedications.  You could also include your new address in the program.  This could be a booklet, a book mark a fan or any other creative idea that matches your look and feel of your wedding.
